This unit develops students’ understanding of exercise physiology and its application to exercise testing and prescription for health and performance. Students will examine the acute and chronic physiological and metabolic adaptations to aerobic, anaerobic, and resistance training and will develop skills in conducting appropriate physiological assessments and interpreting testing data. Students will examine important factors influencing exercise responses, including age, sex, ambient environment, nutrition, and ergogenic supplements, and apply this knowledge to ensure safe, evidence-based exercise testing and prescription. The unit also emphasises critical evaluation of contemporary sports science literature, including nutritional and ergogenic strategies, to support evidence-based recommendations for athletes and general populations.

Learning Outcomes

Outcome
1

Explain the metabolic, physiological, and fitness component adaptations to aerobic, anaerobic, and resistance training, including sex differences in physiology, and identify tests that can be used to assess adaptation.

2

Describe the metabolic, physiological, fitness, and health-related changes that occur across the lifespan, including pregnancy and the influence of exercise on chronic disease risk factors and apply this knowledge to inform evidence-based exercise prescription for health.

3

Analyse the acute physiological and metabolic responses to exercise across major body systems and evaluate the influence of environmental conditions on these responses to inform strategies that optimise exercise performance and safety.

4

Select appropriate equipment and conduct physiological assessments of exercise capacity, cardiorespiratory and musculoskeletal function.

5

Interpret testing data including calculating exercise workload, efficiency and energy expenditure across a range of exercise intensities.

6

Analyse contemporary sports science literature on current exercise physiology topics, including ergogenic and nutritional strategies, to develop evidence-based recommendations for athletes and general populations.
