This unit enables students to study the structures and kinesiological functions of the musculoskeletal system of the human body. Knowledge of functional anatomy can be applied in a variety of settings/situations and the unit will equip students with the fundamental skills to apply their knowledge in analysing discrete phases in an activity or exercise and identify the major muscular contributors to each joint movement. The unit will also equip them with the skills to administer and interpret flexibility, range of motion, anthropometric measurements and perform postural analysis.

Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this unit, students are expected to gain the following [K]nowledge, [S]kills and [A]pplication of knowledge & skills

Learning Outcomes
Ref
Outcome
1

Describe the biomechanical properties of human tissue structures and analyse how biological tissues and the neuro-musculoskeletal system respond to loading, disuse, overuse, ageing and injury, and apply this knowledge to interpret movement and exercise-related demands.

2

Evaluate static and dynamic postural control by applying musculoskeletal movement analysis, including Functional Movement Screening, to explain the contribution of individual and integrated joint complexes to posture and movement.

3

Use correct anatomical terminology to interpret and communicate information and assessment results in human movement settings.

4

Analyse the influence of body proportions and body composition on health, movement and sport performance, and conduct anthropometric measurements using established protocols.

5

Apply biomechanical and functional anatomy principles to analyse common exercise movements for major muscle groups and joint complexes to identify movement deficiencies, and recommend progressions, regressions and corrective strategies to enhance performance and minimise injury risk.

6

Administer and interpret flexibility, range of motion and anthropometric assessments, compare results with normative values where appropriate, and evaluate the limitations of these measurements for informing health, performance and movement analysis.
