Unit MIDGD6204 - Care of the Neonate with Increased Needs

Unit description

This unit builds on previous knowledge of the well neonate. Students will develop a comprehensive understanding of high-quality evidence-based neonatal care and build their skills in assessing, planning and managing the care of the neonate with complex health needs. Students will develop an understanding of multidisciplinary care and collaborative practice with consideration of family-centred and culturally safe care and engages them to reflect and think critically to enhance, shape and improve clinical practice and neonatal outcomes. In addition, students will develop an understanding of the socio-cultural elements surrounding the care of the unwell newborn and their families.

Unit content

This unit focuses on the midwifery care of the compromised neonate, including: <ul><li>The midwife's role and scope in caring for the compromised neonate </li><li>Levels of care and family-centred care</li><li>Transition to extrauterine life, neonatal resuscitation, stabilisation and post care</li><li>Pathophysiology's affecting neonatal health, including impacts of maternal illness and other complexities arising in the newborn </li><li>Care of the preterm, small for gestational age and fetal growth restricted infant</li><li>Feeding challenges of the unwell neonate</li><li>Drug, fluid and nutritional requirements and calculations of the unwell neonate</li><li>Care of the newborn with hypoglycaemia and hyperbilirubinaemia (jaundice)</li><li>Care of the neonate with neurological conditions and birth trauma </li><li>Care of the neonate affected by substances</li><li>Developmental care and pain management</li><li>Care of the newborn with congenital abnormalities and chromosomal abnormalities</li><li>Ethical and legal issues in neonatal care </li><li>Infants and children at risk and community services</li></ul> The ANMAC National Accreditation Standards for the Midwife (2021); NMBA Midwife Standards for Practice (2018); NMBA Code of Conduct for the Midwife (2018) and Code of Ethics for the Midwife (2014) have substantially informed the syllabus/content of this unit.
