This unit explores the complexity and importance of global biodiversity and the ecological principles that underpin its conservation. Students will examine the diversity of life, the interrelationships between living organisms and their environments, and the biotic and abiotic factors that shape ecosystems. Key themes include the distribution and measurement of biodiversity, the ecological and cultural value of species, and the major threats driving biodiversity loss, such as habitat destruction, climate change, invasive species, and overexploitation. Students will participate in a 4-day fieldtrip experience exploring real world conservation strategies, protected area management, wildlife rehabilitation, ecotourism, human–wildlife conflict, and sustainable development.
