This unit introduces students to painting as a key medium for exploring two-dimensional visual arts practice. Through thematic studio projects, students develop foundational knowledge and skills in painting materials, methods, tools and processes while investigating key visual arts concepts including composition, colour, surface, space, scale and visual expression. Students undertake practical exercises and creative projects that encourage experimentation, observation and the development of technical skills. Demonstrations, studio activities, critiques and reflective learning support students to develop visual arts vocabulary, problem-solving approaches and an understanding of painting practices within historical and contemporary contexts. Safe and responsible studio practices are embedded throughout the unit.
